GA Level 3 Award in Elephant Studies

The Level 3 Award in Elephant Studies provides those that have a fascination in elephants with detailed information and guidance on not only how elephants came to be through studying their evolution, biology, ecology and behaviour, but also by looking at how humans have impacted elephants and how we can help captive elephants and protect wild elephants.
Both of the main species of elephant, the African and Asian will be discussed in this course along with information on sub-species. This will provide learners with a broad understanding of all existing species of elephant and the challenges that they face today.
Whether your interest sits more so with wild elephants or with helping those in captivity, this course will provide the foundation for a deeper understanding of elephants, both wild and captive, and pave the way to a successful future helping elephants.

In this first unit the learner will understand how modern-day elephants evolved and how they are adapted
to their environment through anatomical and behavioural adaptations. In this section, the role of the mammoth in elephant evolution will be discussed. The learner will also understand and appreciate elephant biology, such as how they regulate their body temperature and the complexities of their fascinating behaviour. The ecology of elephants will also be discussed and learners will understand how elephants fit in with their environment and other species.

In the second and final unit of this course the learner will understand the principles of caring for elephants in captivity covering aspects such as legislation, accommodation and nutrition. The learner will also understand common health and behavioural problems of captive elephants and know ways to improve captive elephant welfare. Knowledge of conservation actions to protect elephants will also be developed with examples of the conservation of wild elephants and examples of how captive elephants contribute to conservation efforts.
