This qualification supports progression into Veterinary Care Assistant roles and may also support progression towards veterinary nursing training, subject to the entry requirements of the chosen training provider and awarding organisation.
This comprehensive qualification, recognised by the Association of Veterinary Animal Care Assistants (AVACA), is ideal for learners who want to pursue a career as a Veterinary Care Assistant in the UK. It covers essential skills such as performing health checks, administering treatments, handling and restraining small animals and supporting the team during surgical procedures. Learners will also gain practical knowledge in animal nutrition, hygiene, safety protocols and biosecurity measures critical to a veterinary practice.
The course enhances communication skills with clients and colleagues, covers managing difficult situations and ensures accurate record keeping. Learners will explore Continuing Professional Development (CPD) and personal development planning to support ongoing career growth.
Learners complete a minimum of 35 hours of hands-on practical experience in a suitable animal-care environment. A placement does not need to be arranged before enrolment, and the edYOUcate team can provide guidance on suitable settings and the evidence required. On completion, learners will be prepared to support veterinary teams while maintaining high standards of animal welfare and professional practice.
The GA Level 2 Diploma for Veterinary Care Assistants is also recognised by Lantra as equivalent to three GCSEs (including Science), providing a pathway to progress onto Veterinary Nursing qualifications such as the Lantra Level 3 Work Based Diplomas in Veterinary Nursing (Small Animal or Equine) without the need to have all 5 of the required GCSEs.
In this unit, learners will explore the role of a Veterinary Care Assistant (VCA) within a veterinary practice. They will develop an understanding of different types of veterinary practices, team roles and the key skills needed to be an effective VCA. The unit covers the ethical and legal framework of veterinary practice, including medicines regulations and Schedule 3 requirements.
Learners will also build their knowledge of animal behaviour and welfare, focusing on the Five Animal Needs and the safe handling of small animals. They will gain an understanding of health and safety regulations specific to the veterinary environment. This unit equips learners with the professional, legal and practical knowledge essential for the VCA role.
In this unit, learners will develop their understanding of animal anatomy and physiology, including cellular biology, the structure and function of cells and anatomical terminology essential for veterinary and animal care employment. They will explore the major body systems including respiratory, circulatory, reproductive, digestive, musculoskeletal, excretory, endocrine, and nervous systems, gaining knowledge of their components, functions and interactions in maintaining animal health. Learners will also study body cavities and species variations where relevant.
Assessment is via an externally set and assessed online multiple choice exam, provided by GA through the AutoProctor system:

This unit introduces learners to animal nutrition, feeding behaviours and dietary needs. They will examine essential nutrients, the significance of a balanced diet and different feeding patterns. Learners will also develop an understanding of feeding and watering routines, including food hygiene, monitoring feeding plans and ensuring sufficient water intake.
The unit also covers housing, hygiene and environmental enrichment, emphasising appropriate housing conditions and effective hygiene practices. Learners will explore animal care within a veterinary setting, focusing on special dietary requirements, hygiene protocols, stress management, exercise, and personalised care for inpatients.
In this unit, learners will develop an understanding of common injuries and illnesses in small animals, including how they are transmitted and their impact on health and wellbeing. They will examine zoonotic and notifiable diseases and learn how to monitor inpatients by recognising clinical signs, performing health checks and knowing when to escalate concerns.
The unit also covers biosecurity and infection control, including the definition of biosecurity, essential measures and SOPs to prevent the spread of disease, handwashing techniques, the use of PPE, preventative care and safe disposal of veterinary waste.
In this unit, learners will gain an understanding of how to respond to emergency situations in a veterinary practice, including triage procedures and emergency protocols within their role. They will learn basic first aid techniques, such as monitoring vital signs and using emergency equipment. The unit will also cover methods for stabilising and safely transporting animals in need of emergency care, along with an understanding of the legal considerations and limitations involved in providing first aid to small animals.
In this unit, learners will develop their understanding of assisting with surgical procedures as part of a Veterinary Care Assistant role. They will explore pre-operative procedures, including preparing equipment and ensuring sterile environments.
Learners will also gain knowledge of sterilisation principles and handling of surgical equipment, along with supporting with monitoring. They will explore the euthanasia process and develop the skills needed to support both the clinical team and clients through this sensitive experience.
In this unit, learners will develop their understanding of diagnostic procedures in veterinary practice, including the use and upkeep of diagnostic equipment. They will explore diagnostic imaging techniques, associated health and safety risks and methods to minimise those risks. Learners will gain knowledge of sample collection and laboratory procedures, including appropriate handling, storage and transportation of biological samples within their scope of practice.
In this unit, learners will develop key skills in client communication and record-keeping within a veterinary practice. They will explore effective communication techniques with both clients and colleagues, including handling challenging situations and conveying information clearly and with empathy.
Learners will gain an understanding of documentation practices and the importance of maintaining accurate patient records. They will learn how to support pet owners through a range of situations, from routine care to more sensitive matters. The unit also covers GDPR requirements and how to apply them in safeguarding client and patient information within a veterinary setting.
In this unit, learners will develop their knowledge of various career pathway options and the factors to consider when selecting a suitable career path. They will gain an understanding of Continuing Professional Development (CPD), including its importance for career progression and the different ways to engage in CPD activities.
Learners will also explore the value of personal development planning, learning how to create their own personalised development plans to set clear goals and strategies for continued professional growth.
In this unit, learners will acquire knowledge of safe and effective methods for handling and restraining small animals, identifying the correct techniques and equipment for routine procedures, while understanding their importance in ensuring safety and reducing stress. They will explore how to recognise signs of stress and anxiety in small animals during handling and restraint, as well as strategies to minimise these responses, highlighting the positive impact on the animal’s wellbeing.
Learners will develop an understanding of specific restraint techniques required for administering medications and treatments, ensuring these procedures are performed efficiently and in line with best welfare practices and veterinary practice protocols.
In this unit, learners will develop comprehensive skills in animal care, including performing routine health checks by accurately monitoring and recording vital signs, assessing physical conditions, recognising signs of illness and administering treatments safely under supervision. They will learn to provide appropriate diets based on species-specific needs, monitor intake and report any concerns to the clinical team.

They will adhere to hygiene and safety protocols, maintaining clean environments and waste disposal in compliance with health regulations, with an emphasis on sustainable practices. Finally, learners will assess the exercise and enrichment needs of various animals, incorporating activities that promote physical and mental wellbeing, while monitoring and recording outcomes to support overall health and prevent behavioural issues.
This unit requires a minimum of 35 hours of practical experience in an animal care environment, under appropriate supervision, documented in a Practical Skills Log. It provides evidence of skills and competence. Learners do not need to have a placement before enrolling on the course, the team can assist with this.

To become a qualified Veterinary Care Assistant, learners need to complete a recognised qualification.
The course provides an ideal entry point into the veterinary profession, especially for those without GCSEs. It also offers a direct progression route to the Lantra Level 3 Work-Based Diploma in Veterinary Nursing, enabling learners to train as a Registered Veterinary Nurse (RVN) (with the addition of appropriate GCSEs or equivalent) and further their careers in veterinary care. For learners hoping to progress to RVN training via Vetskill, learners must evidence capability in numeracy, literacy, and science, written and spoken English and mathematics. This would typically include GCSEs at grades 9 to 4 (or A* to C) or National 5 at grades A-C (SCQF Level 5) including English, mathematics and a science subject, or equivalent, to register on this programme. The GA L2 Diploma for Veterinary Care Assistants provides the evidence of capability in Science, replacing the need for a science GCSE.
Veterinary Care Assistants can work in veterinary surgeries, animal hospitals, rescue centres and animal shelters. With additional qualifications, they may progress to roles such as Veterinary Nurse, or specialise in areas such as surgical nursing, laboratory work, or animal behaviour.
