Meet the Fierce-Toothed Lizard That Changed What We Know About Reptiles
A fossil discovered near Sidmouth in Devon revealed the oldest known relative of modern lizards and snakes, the Agriodontosaurus helsbypetrae. This fierce-toothed lizard had large, formidable teeth and a powerful jaw, which suggests it was a highly skilled hunter. Its sharp teeth would have allowed it to pierce and shred tough insect exoskeletons, while its strong jaws and well-developed tongue helped it hold and manipulate prey.

This insect eating reptile lived over 241 million years ago during the Middle Triassic and belonged to the lepidosaur family, which includes snakes, lizards and the tuatara; a lesser-known but fascinating reptile species. Native to New Zealand, tuatara grow slowly, can live for over 100 years and are the only surviving members of an ancient reptile group that once shared the planet with dinosaurs.

According to the RSPCA’s Exotic Pets Briefing 2021, a staggering 4,094 reptiles were involved in welfare cases over the course of just one year. Of these, 26% were cases of neglect or deliberate harm, 25% involved requests for assistance, another 25% were abandoned or found as strays and 13% were sick or injured. These alarming figures highlight the harsh reality that reptiles often suffer due to a lack of proper care and a widespread misunderstanding of their complex needs.
