The Level 4 Certificate in Certificate in Canine Hydrotherapy For Musculoskeletal Practitioners provides in-depth theory and practical training for extending the essential skills of canine and small animal musculoskeletal practitioners. The qualification is IRVAP (ICH)  approved and covers clinical risk assessment, health monitoring and first aid, ensuring safe and effective practice. Learners will gain knowledge in water management and sustainable practices for hydrotherapy environments. The qualification includes detailed theory of canine functional anatomy and biomechanics to support accurate assessments and treatments. Advanced techniques in hydrotherapy pool treatments are also explored. The qualification equips students to apply clinical reasoning and assessment processes in a hydrotherapy setting and is designed to bridge the gap between MSK practice and level 4 upskilling allowing qualified MSK practitioners to extend their knowledge and meet changing membership organisation requirements without the need for studying a full Level 4 Diploma.

This unit focuses on equipping learners with essential skills for Clinical Risk Assessment (CRA), health monitoring, and canine emergency first aid in the context of hydrotherapy. Learners will gain an understanding of the principles and responsibilities of CRA, including risk rating, safety measures, and ethical considerations specific to hydrotherapy practice. The course covers how to conduct thorough health checks, assess hazards, and manage both precautionary and contraindicated conditions. Additionally, learners will develop skills in continuous health and behavioural monitoring during hydrotherapy sessions and understand the legal and professional responsibilities when responding to emergencies. The unit also covers the application of first aid, including CPR, bandaging, and emergency evacuation techniques.

This unit provides learners with the clinical knowledge and skills necessary for effective water management in canine hydrotherapy settings. Learners will study the legal and professional obligations for safe water management, including the use of filtration systems and backwash methods to maintain water quality. The unit covers the safe application of chemicals, water testing protocols, and biosecurity measures to ensure a safe practice. Learners will also gain hands-on experience in plant maintenance, hygiene operations, and the implementation of water testing procedures. Additionally, the unit emphasises sustainable design and operational strategies for both the facility and equipment to support environmentally responsible and efficient hydrotherapy practices.

In this unit, learners will gain a deep understanding of canine behaviour in a hydrotherapy setting and develop the skills to assess and manage therapeutic handling techniques and clinic enrichment strategies. The unit will explore how canines communicate and respond in the hydrotherapy environment, highlighting the positive and negative influences on their behaviour. Learners will also study various enrichment and handling techniques designed to reduce stress, enhance engagement, and positively affect the canine’s behaviour during treatments. Learners will evaluate the impact of these therapeutic practices on both behaviour and the musculoskeletal system, ensuring a holistic approach to canine care in hydrotherapy.

In this unit, learners will enhance their clinical competencies and proprioceptive treatment techniques for using a hydrotherapy pool to achieve optimal outcomes for canine clients. They will apply their understanding of canine assessments, behaviour, functional anatomy, breed biology, and pathophysiology to make informed decisions when selecting aquatic treatment techniques. The unit covers therapeutic preparation, safe equipment handling, entry and exit techniques, and health monitoring during treatments. Learners will also develop skills in manual therapy, movement shaping, and therapeutic exercise to address mobility and muscle function. Additionally, learners will focus on providing aftercare, reviewing treatment effectiveness, and modifying techniques based on the canine’s progress, ensuring that each treatment plan is tailored to meet the individual needs of the dog.

During the 3 day practical training and assessment in Stafford, Beverley or Bristol, learners will have the opportunity to apply their theoretical knowledge in a real-world setting under the guidance of expert trainers and assessors. The teams are highly qualified, with extensive experience in canine hydrotherapy, ensuring that learners receive top-tier instruction and support. With a deep understanding of both the practical and clinical aspects of hydrotherapy, the team will provide hands-on demonstrations, guided learning and personalised feedback to help learners refine their skills in hydrotherapy pool use, manual therapies, and health monitoring.  Learners will work with a range of canine clients, gaining experience in assessing, treating, and developing tailored treatment plans for dogs with varying needs.
