International Cheetah Day: Celebrating Speed, Survival, and Conservation

On December 4th, the world comes together to mark International Cheetah Day, a celebration of one of nature’s most remarkable animals. Sleek, powerful and astonishingly fast, the cheetah is the ultimate athlete of the natural world, able to accelerate from a standstill to full sprint in just a few strides. For centuries, this extraordinary cat has captured our imagination, standing as a symbol of elegance and agility across the African plains. Yet today, its story is not one of effortless triumph, but of survival against overwhelming odds. Despite being able to outrun almost anything in nature, the cheetah cannot outrun extinction.

Once numbering around 100,000 across Africa and Asia, fewer than 7,100 remain in the wild, having vanished from at least 13 countries. Habitat loss, human-wildlife conflict and the illegal pet trade have pushed these magnificent animals to the brink, making them Africa’s most endangered big cat. 

Yet there is hope. Since 1990, the Cheetah Conservation Fund has been working tirelessly to give wild cheetahs a fighting chance. One of the most powerful tools in their conservation toolkit is rewilding, carefully preparing rescued and orphaned cheetahs to return to the wild. This involves rehabilitation, survival skills training and gradual release into protected reserves. Each cheetah that thrives in the wild strengthens populations, restores ecosystems and promotes biodiversity. Stories like that of Hela, a female cheetah who not only thrived after her release but went on to raise three cubs in the wild, show just how transformative this process can be.

With more than 60% of the world’s land-dwelling carnivores under threat, rewilding has become not simply a conservation option but a necessity. Returning cheetahs to their historic ranges strengthens the species, heals ecosystems and fosters coexistence between people and wildlife. It represents a future in which humans are not only protectors of nature but partners in its survival.

UK zoos are also key players in this global effort. By participating in the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria Ex-situ Programme for cheetahs, they help manage breeding in a way that safeguards genetic diversity and builds a healthy, sustainable population. This “backup” population acts as an insurance policy against extinction. But zoos do far more than breed, they inspire millions of visitors each year, raise awareness of the threats cheetahs face and provide vital funding and expertise for in-situ projects in Africa.

Modern conservation increasingly relies on integrating ex-situ (zoo-based) and in-situ (wild) approaches. Managed populations contribute research on health, genetics and behaviour, while field projects like those run by Cheetah Conservation Fund focus on rewilding, community education and reducing human-wildlife conflict. Together, these approaches create a stronger, more resilient framework for the species’ survival. It is a shining example of how zoos and field conservation can work hand-in-hand to safeguard the future of cheetahs.
