GA Level 3 Award in Canine First Aid

The GA Level 3 Award in Canine First Aid is an Ofqual-regulated UK qualification designed for professionals who need a recognised, credible standard of canine first aid knowledge. Delivered through flexible online learning, this qualification supports safe, confident decision-making in real-world canine emergencies.

This course goes beyond basic first aid awareness, developing a clear understanding of legal responsibilities, professional boundaries, and animal welfare obligations. Learners gain the knowledge required to act appropriately until veterinary care is available, while understanding exactly when referral is essential. Those seeking introductory or refresher learning may also wish to explore our non-regulated canine first aid courses, which are available alongside this regulated option.

The qualification explores risk assessment, hazard awareness, and biosecurity in professional canine environments, alongside the importance of calm communication in emergencies. Learners develop the ability to recognise and respond to a wide range of canine first aid scenarios, including bleeding, shock, choking, burns, fractures, poisoning, seizures, heatstroke, hypothermia, collapse, and cardiac emergencies.

Vital signs assessment, emergency classification, and safe handling, restraint, movement, and transport are embedded throughout.  Learners also gain a clear understanding of canine first aid kit contents and their correct use and maintenance.

This qualification is particularly suitable for canine professionals, animal care staff, students, and canine hydrotherapists (it is recognised by IRVAP). Learners working in rehabilitation or therapy settings may also be interested in our wider canine hydrotherapy and rehabilitation qualifications, which complement this qualification.

IRVAP is pleased to confirm that they recognise the qualification as part of their membership requirements: – Institute of Registered Veterinary Animal Physiotherapist (IRVAP) Council.

The validity of the certificate will expire after three years. After this, it needs to be renewed. It is also strongly advised to do annual refresher training to keep up to date with the principles and practical aspects of canine first aid.
