Caring for the Recumbent Patient

Caring for the Recumbent Patient aims to equip students with a thorough understanding of caring for and managing patients unable to stand or move independently. The first part of the course, focused on care of the recumbent patient, covers essential topics such as recognising different types of recumbency and the nursing considerations crucial for their care. Participants will also learn about the short and long-term complications associated with recumbency, strategies for preventative nursing care and techniques for assessing and managing pain.

The second part is focused on the management of the recumbent patient and delves into practical approaches to patient care. This includes strategies for preventing and treating decubitus ulcers (pressure sores), managing patients requiring ventilation or oxygenation while recumbent and understanding the benefits of exercise and PROM (Positive Range of Motion) in maintaining mobility and preventing musculoskeletal issues. Additionally, the course explores how to use behavioural feedback to assess patient comfort and how to apply massage techniques for circulation and comfort.

This course is set at an equivalent level to Level 3
